I was looking through boxes & old pictures today. I couldn't help laughing out loud at myself. My favorite section was from my 1990's grunge days.
About 1994, when I was in 6th grade, I donned my dad's flannel shirt and bought my first Nirvana CD.
I loved all of it. The lank hair parted in the middle, ripped jeans, and, oh, the music... I relished in the apathetic angsty goodness. I may have even been known to headbang from time to time.
I thought I was hot stuff. So, did anyone else "grunge it up" in the 90's?
i totally remember those days. who is that next to you? Marta? I'd say me, but I know I didn't have a shirt like that
ReplyDelete1994 was my senior year. Flannel shirts over t-shirts were a regular part of the rotation when I wasn't in uniform (band and JROTC).
ReplyDeleteMusic was more Weird Al and classical than anything else.
Smithy- Megan. Totally wild, huh? I think I was in Orchestra class.
ReplyDeleteUm, yes. I was in middle school when I got in to it, and it lasted through my freshman year, (which started in 1994). I cried when Kurt Cobain died. It's all so weird to think about. But I was totally in to grunge music.
ReplyDeleteUm, YES!!! Unfortunately when you were starting the grunge in 6th grade, I was a freshman in high school starting thinking I was hot stuff. I loved Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. Torn jeans, and plenty of headbanging and mosh pits.
ReplyDeleteRuss
LOL, I was at BYU and I remember seeing pictures of you in those days and worrying.
ReplyDeleteI wore black shirts under open Flannel shirts. Sometimes I would wear a black pull over shirt as a jacket. I loved the sleeves of my flannel shirt to be long so I could hook my thumbs through the hole where the cuff was. And the more worn out your shoes were the better. You hated to wear your NEW vans to school until they got all scuffed and dingy. I had the Nirvana CD, but was more of a Smashing Pumpkins girl myself. That was my first concert. The more angsty the better. I loved Toad the Wet Sprocket (still do) because they were mellow, broody, poetic, and their earleir stuff was full of angst. I wished my mom would let me dye my hair blue or something. Not really a headbanger myself... but a mosher ;)! Ahhh... those were the days! The funny thing is I had to try hard to not look like a wanna-be grunger though because my mom would still buy me flowery clothes or things like Tommy Hilfiger jeans and I had no control over it and had to figure out a way to wear them with my flannels and not look like a "poser". And what I would not have given to be able to buy some Docs. But also, my mom would not pay $100+ for combat boots. It costs a lot of $ sometimes to be a legit rebel (like the song "How do you afford your rock n roll lifestyle?") Ha! Good memories! Oh, and I did have the girl at church who pulled me aside and said, "Audra I am worried about you. You wear black all the time and I am afraid you are not doing the right things". I went to seminary EVERY morning. Come on!! So I wore that darn black pullover shirt every day just to tick her off until it finally got stolen/lost.
ReplyDeleteYeah I was like, who is that next to her? Ha ha! Oh.... those lovely middle school days... SO glad their over!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I only have one thing to say... in 1994 you were in 6th grade?!!! I GRADUATED that year... I feel old...
