Automatic Toilets

I HATE AUTOMATIC TOILETS!

Why you might ask? Auto flush toilets mean that you don't have to touch that nasty handle that everyone else touches, right?

Yes, this is true, but I also feel like there are things that I'd reach into a pee filled toilet for before flushing it- my wedding ring, my cell phone, my car keys, a $20 bill.

It scares me every time when I stand up that something is going to fall down and get lost in the abyss of what lies beyond that hole.

HAS ANYONE ELSE THOUGHT EXTENSIVELY ABOUT THIS OR AM I ALONE?

I hate them because Rae hates them. She doesn't want the toilet to flush until she has her pants back on and her ears plugged. So if it's an automatic toilet I have to cover the little sensor when she gets up. One suggestion in a parenting magazine is to cover it with a post-it note.

Thought about it? Yes. Intensely? No.

My niece, Leah, hates them, though. She makes me hold my hand over the sensor so it doesn't flush.

Try reaching for some paper on a poorly placed dispenser and the sensor thinks you're done.

I don't mind them now, but after Rory was potty trained, for about a year we had to avoid restrooms with automatic toilets. Serious screaming and crying would occur if we tried to make her use one. So we would go from store to store to find an old potty.
Spencer doesn't mind though, thank goodness. Oh, and my keys fell in a McDonald's toilet a few months ago. Fortunately it was not an automatic flusher!

I hate when they flush when I am using it. But have not thought that far as to losing things in the toilet. I dropped a Screw into Aloha Snow's toilet yesterday. The problem is it would not flush and I could not just leave a big black screw there... ugh...

Like everyone else I only cared because my kids didn't like it. My daughter once named it the 'scary toilet' and I'd have to hold her hand the whole time.

But you're right. I'd totally stick my hand in if some of that stuff fell in, but if it's flushing there is no chance of retrieval. Boo.

I don't like them b/c I don't trust them to flush when I leave, so I always press the little button to make them flush defeating the whole purpose of having automatic flushers

I don't like them b/c they seem to flush way too much--like when you open the door to go into the stall, when you reach for the TP, when you stand up, etc. Seems like a lot of water waste to me. And of course, as Smithy pointed out, half the time they then DON'T flush when you're leaving. I don't think they're really worth the germs they supposedly save us from touching. (Besides, in theory, you're going to wash your hands as soon as you step out of the stall anyway, right? So all those germs you get from touching the toilet will be washed away right?)
