Homemade Pretzels

Es & I are doing a little pre-preschool group with the kiddos. Today I was in charge of doing the letter 'A'. One of the activities we did was made pretzels into the shape of an 'A'.

Here's the recipe:
4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp whice sugar
1 1/4 cup warm water
5 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 TB veggie oil

1/2 cup baking soda
4 cups hot water
1/4 cup kosher salt

Dissolve yeast & 1 tsp sugar in warm water. Let it stand for 10 minutes.

Mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar & salt. Make a well in the center, add oil & yeast mixture. Mix & form into dough. I had to add a little water (2 TBS) to make it less dry.

Lightly oil bowl, place dough in it & cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise in warm spot for 1 hour.

When dough is risen divide & shape. In large pot dissolve baking soda in hot wate & dip each pretzel into the solution & put it on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with Kosher salt

Bake 450 degrees for 8 minutes until browned.

Wow, those look good! I've never even thought of making pretzels! I did make bagels once, and it looks like the process is very similar. I'll have to try them!
