Nothing Gold Can Stay

Today is the 2 year anniversary of loosing my mom. To celebrate her I made one of my favorite meals she would make me when I was growing up- Koren Braised Chicken.

There are two fantastic things about this recipe 1) she learned it while taking a cooking class on how to cook with your microwave so the whole thing is made in the microwave (which, I'll be honest, kind of creeps me out but we did it anyway & it tasted exactly the same as every week from my childhood) and 2) it's written out in my mom's handwriting. That, my friends, is priceless.

During dinner we listened to the CD my dad made me of my mom's Senior Recital. It's gorgeous. Just lovely. Relaxing and it's amazing how her singing voice sounds so much like her speaking voice. It was just what I needed. Then we talked about my mom- the things the kids remember, the things I remember, and we just spent time recalling the loveliness that was Marie Diane.

Gold. That's what she was. Gold.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I'm sure your mom is delighted that you made one of her favorite meals to honor her. Tender memories for you. (One of my favorite Robert Frost poems...so true.)

Though I did not know her, I know special parts of her through you. I would love to have heard her sing.

A dear friend once sent this to me before he was deployed. I never quite knew what he was trying to say and it broke my heart. This was many years ago and I haven't spoken to him since.

Thanks for sharing how you remember your mom. I am trying to figure out how I want to remember my brother, and how I want my kids to remember him. It is a lot harder than I ever though it would be.
I know your mom is so proud of you and all the awesome things you do.
