REVIEW: The Host

Let me preface this with saying that The Host is a science fiction book. I have a lot of friends who might be able to suspend belief & dislike of sci-fi for a couple sexy vampires but probably not for body-snatching aliens. I happen to like Sci-Fi books, & this would be in the vein of Ender's Game (a more moral, emotive story wrapped in some science fiction).

It is SLOW to start, though. I would say the first 200 pages or so were pretty darn slow. I was hooked enough to keep reading but, wow... it took a while to get to the main bulk of the book. However, once I got there I couldn't stop. It's a fascinating premise- Alien parasites have taken control of humans. The main character is an alien placed in the body of a human who won't surrender her mind or her desire to see her love. It's pretty darn romantic even considering the alien characters, and I thought characters were all rounded & interesting.

I definitely shed a few tears & was happy/sad for each character & their plight. I really enjoyed the book, but like my feelings on Twilight I can understand why other people might not agree. Anyone who's read it, what did you think?

P.S. The Amazon review were pretty good too

I really enjoyed it. I actually think I liked it better than the Twilight series - I enjoyed the writing more, but probably just because it wasn't as teenagerish. I also happen to enjoy science fiction, and have read a lot of Orson Scott Card, and this book was definitely more his style- which I thought was funny because there is a quote from him on the back.

Like you said, I can understand why it might not be for everyone - one of my friends was having a harder time with it than the vampires.

Also, it the heroine was a little more enjoyable for me than Bella.

* possible spoiler for those who haven't read it....*********

I was a little disappointed in the end....it was totally what I wanted to happen and it was satisfying and all....but it became a little less adult and more "pat pat, everything is going to be okay" with that ending. I dunno. Like I said, it was what I wanted to happen, but....don't know if that makes much sense.

I'm a slow reader and am half-way through, but I'm enjoying it. It didn't pull me in like Twilight and keep me up until the wee hours of the morning. Which is a good thing, because I do have to go to work in the morning! But, I do get excited when I have a minute to keep reading ...
