Rob's Potty Training Story

I realize this post isn't interesting to all my readers, but I got an email asking about how I potty trained Rob. I wish I had some secret to my success with him. He really did it on his own (a lot like Sydney).

I know some people have different methods & ideas about potty training & they all work great. Our "laid back" approach really worked for us & our kids but isn't for everyone.

For us I just waited until he was interested & ready. I didn't worry about when he was going to potty, if it was as fast as anyone else, or push him until he was ready. This meant having a little potty, letting him go whenever he wanted to, having him pee first thing in the morning, getting him underwear & telling him he could wear them when he's potty trained. And of course lots of hugs, kisses, & praise when he does go & not making him feel bad if he doesn't or has an accident. And really, he just decided he was ready one day.

He still wears diapers to bed because he still wakes up wet. There were a couple days this week he woke up dry & asked to go potty in the middle of the night, but I'm not pushing my old washer past that which is can withstand. Maybe "pull ups" at night is the next step?

So, that's it. He pees & poops in the potty everyday now. He's even had bowel issues the last two days & still makes it to the potty just fine. What about you guys? Anything especially worked for you?

P.S. Yes, the 3rd pic on the top is Rob waving "bye-bye" to his poop. Hey, whatever works.

Yes it's such a kid driven thing. As parents we really gotta go with their schedule and not ours. Way to go Berto!

That's awesome for you! Good job! I've heard not pushing them is the best way. Jack has no problem peeing on the toilet when I ask him if he'd like to, but he wants nothing to do with pooping on it?! What can I do?

Yeah, we tried the not pushing thing with Elizabeth, but she'll be 4 soon, so we decided to "push it" with both girls and get it over with. Amelia is doing better than her big sister.

April- I know, it'll be nice for all of us. I was stressed about potty training this one. I thought he was going to take work. Turns out my kids come out of the womb wanting to pee in the potty.

Debbie- I know! I seriously wasn't expecting anything out of him until 3 or 4. I don't mind changing diapers so it wasn't even on my radar yet.

Cindy- Pooping came later for both my kids. I just watch for the signs "red face & holding breath" and then run them to the potty. I literally dance & sing when he goes on it & makes a BIG BIG deal. It seemed to help him.

Christie- Yeah, i think some kids need a little push in the right direction. And each kid is different. I mean, my kids are siblings but wow, they are different.

I say stick with diapers at night unless he really cares - pull ups are more expensive!

Way to go Berto!!
