Mommy's Little Helper

It's no secret to those who know my Berto-Bear that he's a wild man. He's got a TON of energy & is a lot of times hard to rein in. He's super independent & isn't the lil' "people pleaser" Syd is (which is both good & hard).

I've found a magic button to my Berto though. Being a "helper". He loves it. I give him a job, make him feel like he's a big help, & praise him for it. For the past 2 or 3 days it's changed the way both of us interact.

Has this worked for anyone else? Any other suggestions for a full of energy, defiant 2 year old? (Other than the fact that he's a boy & 2 years old)

Oh yes. This is a very good way to get cooperation. Ezra loves to be a big helper.

I've found my boys will do anything if I turn it into a superhero rescue mission. Something like, "The Reading Destroyer has set off a bomb in the bookstore, hoping to end reading for mankind everywhere! I need two superheros to foil his plans and put the books back on the shelves before he lights them on fire! Look, here he comes!"
Works like a charm.

That's how my mom got me to do things...right up through high school :D Ha! Doesn't work so well on my cats, though.

I love the pics. Spencer will even walk through our neighborhood just to pick up trash off the ground. So funny.

Susan- If only it worked everyday, right? :)

Three Kids- Ummm... that is BRILLIANT! I love it! I think Syd & Rob would both do well with that tactic. Thanks!

Leah- I fully intend on making my kids to all my jobs as soon as they are old enough! :)

Brooke- Oh, what a cutie!

I'm with the jobs thing. It changed our life w/ Rory (3) We started real small, like help unload the dishwasher and make her bed. I feel like it both gives them a routine and empowers them :) We're also big on making a race out of, well, anything...

Jennie- Man, Rory is 3! You need to live closer to we can hang out! And, yes, the race thing- I need to use that. It's brilliant. Though Berto & Syd are already SUPER competitive ("I beat you to the sop of the stairs!") that might make them crazy people. :)

Robby has a couple of "jobs" around the house - like filling up the soap on the dishwasher & closing it up, helping unload, he is always good at putting things away in his room - it helps for everything to have a place so he knows where it goes. He is very proud when he tells me, "that's my job!" Even just buckling the top part of his car seat... helper is the way to go! I think having high expectations of what they can do helps, challenge them...

Es- I like that, "having high expectations challenges them". I dig it.

Works with Elizabeth and Amelia, especially Elizabeth and her sensory seeking.

This has helped me too! Jack is loving to be defiant right now... It's wonderful!

James- Yes, it's semi-helpful for me & it teaches them things I might not normally think to teach them.

Cindy- Oh man, Rob is the defiant KING! It's rough having a 2 year old boy, eh?
