Ear Candles

When Scott & I were dating he talked me into doing ear candles with him (beeswaxwax candles you light & it's supposed to clean the wax outta your ear/toxins from your body). I guess a granola-ish roomate of his had told him about them.

Well, yesterday the kids & I were at GoodEarth & I saw some. We bought a couple & brought them home to surprise Scott.

I'm pretty sure I've finally convinced Scott the whole concept of ear candles is poppycock but it was still fun to do anyway.

my best friend growing up, her family did this. she tried to get me once to do it, i refused. i wonder if she still promotes it....she is looking to become a Natural Path. she is one of those people that knows all sorts of random remedies and health stuff. so i should ask her again about this.

Friends of mine have used ear candles in the past and sworn they were fabulous. I've always thought they were a little weird. I'm glad you and Scott had a good time with them, though. What an odd date that must have been!

Hahaha! My mom had a bunch of these in her bathroom cabinets forever! I think she bought them to try and we just never did.

LOL I've some in my cabinet that I bought last summer when I had clogged ears for a month and was getting desperate. They cleared up before I got brave enough to try them.

I spent a year of my life honestly loving those darn candles. I had everyone in my family converted to them...then one day I heard a rumor that you could burn your eardrum and I haven't done it since...but I think that maybe it might be fun to try again. :) Good to see that they're still around!

so did it work better than a q-tip?

My all time favorite for all things ears and throat.....peroxide. I love the sound of the bubbles as it is breaking up the junk...yeah!

When I used to work in one of the natural foods stores in Paradise we sold these. Some people swore by them. I was always curious about them but somehow felt like I would be filling up my head with runny wax lol. So how does it feel?

Rachel- It feels like nothing really. Was doesn't run down your ear or anything. I think the idea is NEGATIVE PRESSURE to suck stuff out- nothing goes in your ear. The ash the does fall into the tube from the burning is stopped by a little vaulve thing. If that makes any sense. But, no, nothing actually gets in your ear. I'm crazy about that- I won't put peroxide or vinegar for swimmers ear either. Don't mess with your ear drums. Trust me.

You know, my undergrad was in audiology, so I'm quite the expert... (k, so I'm not)

We talked about these in my classes and they not only don't work - my professors said it's the candle's wax, not your ear wax that collects (although, wouldn't that be obvious when you use it? what do you think?), but it's pretty dangerous - a lot of injuries to the ear drum (tympanic membrane - that's what we experts call it). I'm definitely on the camp of "it won't happen to me" for warnings such as these, but the professors made a big deal out of it.

You're also not supposed to use q-tips and I'm totally addicted.

Q-tips work fine for me. Jeb already knows how to use them.

Ear candles are about the dumbest thing I know. They are up there will hanging pyramids over your bed to channel the energy of the universe into you while you sleep or wearing copper bracelets to cure cancer. Aren't you amazed at how seemingly intelligent people will throw all learning to the wind to indulge in such incomparably stupid beliefs? Okay, rant over.
