Obecalp

I don't want to say anything mean, or criticize but I feel like these Obecalp (Placebo spelled backwards) sugar pills are NOT a good idea. It's basically a sugar pill to give kids when they get hurt but no "real" medicine is going to help them (they compare it to putting a band-aid on a "boo-boo" that doesn't really need a band-aid).

I agree totally with this New York Times article. I think giving our kids fake pills to "take their pain away" teaches them that taking a pill is the only way to feel better. Proponents of the placebo does make some good points (listed in the article) & I can see the benefits of some placebos. However, I can promise you that I'll let my kids cry through aches & pains that can't be medicated so they learned (like I learned) that a pill doesn't cure everything.

What do you guys think?

I agree with you Liv. Gosh, teach your kids to suck it up...I am a meany I guess, I only do bandaids for blood no other owies. I would rather give them a piece of candy to get over it than candy disguised as medicine. And besides what about the lies....

i totally agree---altho i have told my kids "that pill you just took is going to make you feel so much better so fast---" even tho i know it will take a good 20 minutes---power of suggestion.

I agree with you and the article. I think there are too many meds available for EVERYTHING! I hate how you see commercials for drugs for this and that... oh, my legs have a twitch, I need to get some drugs. Seriously!?
I'm not trying to say that RLS is not a real problem.. but I doesn't everyone get them from time to time!? Do we really need drugs?

Gee whiz, we are going to have a medicine addicted generation! Last week Blaise was pretty sick and was getting medicine frequently, and Rae would want some too, so we'd give her an extra vitamin or just a piece of candy or something. (Usually we'd just tell her to shush, but we were out of town and anything goes)
